A letter to the editor sent to the Centre Daily Times by a US Congressman from Alabama

Saturday’s visit to State College was my first trip to your beautiful campus in 22 years.

Once again, I went with family and friends to watch my alma mater take on one of the giants in college football, the Penn State Nittany Lions.

While the trip home was obviously much less enjoyable for the home team than the visitors from the Deep South, I can’t let another day pass without offering a sincere thank you on behalf of one great university to another for the way the Penn State family made the people of Alabama feel so welcome.

Starting back in the spring, after the deadly tornados ripped apart more than half of my state, the Penn State fans jumped into action.

It was truly moving to see so many people sporting T-shirts whose proceeds were dedicated to helping rebuild areas of Alabama destroyed by the tornadoes.

But the goodness of the people of Pennsylvania didn’t end there.

From the “Fan Ambassadors” who moved throughout the impressive tailgate area to the electrifying atmosphere created by the whiteout in Beaver Stadium, the entire experience was truly something to behold.

I have never been to a better environment for a college football game.

In a word, the Penn State nation is one classy program, boasting the winningest coach in the game and the nicest fans you’ll ever find. Without a doubt, you have mastered the art of making game day at Penn State something rivaled at few other universities.

Thanks from the Alabama Nation. We’re pulling for you to run the table the rest of this year, win your conference championship and be back where Penn State belongs — in the elite of college football.

U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, R.-Ala. Mobile, Ala.
